This is not a food blog. It's a field guide. A reckoning. A love letter to butter, flour, and the great Scottish tearoom.
How it started
It began with a throw-away comment...I fancied a morning scone and Mr R decided to use the interweb to try and find the best place to go. A long search revealed a lack of information on the subject (I know...hard to believe), and then Mr R made a fatal mistake: "Why don't you just travel around Scotland and find the best scone yourself?" I suspect Mr R has probably started keeping his thoughts to himself ever since.
That was 2022. Since then, the mission has been simple: find the good ones. Track them down across every region of Scotland, eat an unreasonable number of them, and report back honestly.
Scones of Scotland is the result. Part directory, part review site, part personal obsession made public.
How we rate
Every cafe is rated out of five scones. Here's what we're looking for.
Texture
Light and airy inside, with just enough crust on the outside. Dense is a sin. Crumbly is a crime.
Flavour
Buttery, slightly sweet, with a hint of something warm. A plain scone should taste like it means it.
Temperature
Warm is good. Fresh from the oven is exceptional. Cold is forgivable only if everything else is perfect.
The accompaniments
Proper jam. Real clotted or whipped cream (although I tend to stick to butter and jam). Not a tiny foil packet of something from a catering supplier.
The setting
A scone eaten in a draughty farmhouse tearoom with mismatched crockery will always taste better. We factor this in but a scone will always outrank location.
The rules
No sponsored visits. No free scones in exchange for coverage. Every cafe on this site has been visited and paid for like a normal person.
Ratings are final. Unless a cafe has clearly changed hands or undergone a significant kitchen overhaul, scores stand.
Fruit scones count. Plain scones count more.
